The governments of the UK and Mauritius recently announced the transfer of sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, including the territory associated with the .io country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD), to Mauritius. This has raised questions about the future of .io domains.
Kim Davies, VP of IANA Services at ICANN, clarified that ccTLDs are assigned based on the ISO 3166-1 standard. Since “IO” remains on the list, no immediate changes will occur. However, if “IO” is removed, ICANN’s retirement policy would initiate a five-year phase-out period, extendable under certain conditions.
For now, .io domain owners can rest assured that their domains will remain active at least until 2030, providing ample time to explore alternatives if necessary.
