The Colombian Ministry of ICT (MinTIC) has issued a new call for tenders for the registry contract of the country code top-level domain .co.
The “Request for Proposal” (RFP), released on March 14, 2025, outlines an accelerated timeline: the deadline for submitting bids is set for May 6, 2025, with the new registry to be announced as early as May 26, 2025. However, the government has reserved the right to make short-term adjustments to this schedule. The proposed term of the new contract is ten years—double the current five-year duration—with an estimated contract value of US$77 million. Currently, and at least until October 2025, the rights to manage approximately 3 million .co domains are held by .CO Internet SAS, a subsidiary of GoDaddy Registry Services. The .co domain is regarded as one of the most successfully marketed country code top-level domains globally, largely due to aggressive marketing efforts, including prominent placements during the “Super Bowl” finale. Additionally, .co benefits from typographical errors associated with .com domains, making preemptive (defensive) registrations a strategic consideration.
