Domainincite News:Newfold Digital, the parent company behind a range of domain registrar brands, is officially retiring the Web.com brand after 18 years in operation. The move is part of a larger consolidation strategy that will see Web.com customers migrated to Network Solutions, one of the oldest and most recognizable names in the industry.
Web.com assured its users that the transition will be seamless, promising no service interruptions, downtime, or changes to pricing or account details. In a statement, the company said:
“We’re committed to making the transition to Network Solutions seamless and convenient… Simply put, you won’t have to do anything.”
At the close of 2024, Web.com managed approximately 818,000 gTLD domains, a steep drop from its peak of over 2 million during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the brand had been regaining momentum with steady monthly growth in 2024.
Network Solutions, once the sole registrar for gTLDs before ICANN introduced competition in the early 2000s, now manages over 5 million gTLD domains. Ironically, Web.com originally acquired Network Solutions in 2011 for over $561 million in a cash-and-stock deal, but the subsidiary has now outlasted its acquirer as a standalone brand.
There has been no official word yet on whether other legacy brands under Newfold Digital, such as Register.com, will face a similar fate.
The retirement of the Web.com brand also raises speculative interest in the potential future sale or repurposing of the premium domain name Web.com, though such a move would likely be years away, if ever.
