A new benchmark has been set in the domain name market. Industry pioneer George Kirikos revealed on his blog that Shopify acquired Shop.com for $99 million—a figure sourced from the “intangible assets” section of corporate financial documents, which had not been previously disclosed to the public.

Prior to this, veteran industry broker Andrew Rosener had mentioned hearing that the deal was valued at nearly $100 million; the financial documents have now confirmed the scale of the transaction. At $99 million, this purchase surpasses the previous record of $70 million held by AI.com, making it the most expensive publicly verifiable domain name sale in the world. (AI.com had previously eclipsed the $30 million record set by Voice.com.)
Interestingly, even at this astronomical price, Kirikos argues that the domain remains undervalued. In a previous analysis, he suggested that Shop.com—a premium, single-word domain perfectly suited for the e-commerce sector—could theoretically be valued as high as $400 million.
Short, memorable, single-word domain names with inherent e-commerce connotations have long been highly sought-after digital assets for major technology and e-commerce giants. This record-breaking deal further underscores the scarcity and immense value of premium, generic domain names, continuing to drive up valuation expectations within the domain market.
