IE Domain Registry Limited, the manager of the Irish country code top-level domain .ie, has announced its intention to classify content under .ie domains according to the NACE system.
NACE, a French acronym for “Nomenclature statistique des activités économiques dans la Communauté européenne,” represents a system developed by the EU for classifying economic activities. These classifications are used for statistical purposes by Eurostat. The .ie Registry aims to gain a better understanding of Ireland’s online business landscape through this initiative, focusing on aspects such as “under-represented sectors,” “growth trends,” “industry evolution,” “targeting sectors,” “domain activity and renewal,” and “security stance.” The Registry has already commenced data collection through web crawling, gathering text, titles, descriptions, and domain names from initially 4,440 highly content-rich websites, leading to the development of a predictive model. Similar initiatives are also underway, including the Belgian DNS Belgium’s WebCat project.
This move signifies an innovative approach to enhancing insights into Ireland’s digital business environment through structured data analysis and classification, aligning with broader trends in data-driven decision-making and industry understanding.
