Domainincite : Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and the .blog gTLD registry, has announced that it is moving its registry services from CentralNic to Hello Registry, a platform jointly operated by CIRA (the Canadian .ca registry) and SIDN (the Dutch .nl registry).
Transition to Hello Registry
Hello Registry was launched in November 2024 as a collaboration between the two national ccTLD operators. Automattic has been running .blog on CentralNic, which is owned by Team Internet, but will now migrate its 300,000 registered .blog domains—including 50,000 new registrations in the past year—to the new platform.
No Service Disruption Expected
Automattic reassured registrants that the transition, scheduled for late April 2025, has been carefully planned to avoid disruptions. A blog post from the company stated:
“We’ve been working closely with our registrar partners since November 2024 to ensure a smooth transition.”
The company also highlighted that the move will bring “new opportunities for growth and innovation.”
Clarification on Decision-Making
Following the announcement, Automattic clarified that the decision to migrate .blog was made by Knock Knock WHOIS There (KKWT), the official registry operator for .blog. While KKWT is a subsidiary of Automattic, it operates independently as per ICANN regulations. Therefore, this was not a direct decision by WordPress or WordPress.com.
