The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released its latest “WIPO Domain Name Report 2024,” confirming that UDRP cases remain at a high level. In 2024, a total of 6,168 disputes were filed under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and its ccTLD variants, reflecting a slight decrease from 6,192 cases in 2023.
Key Highlights from the Report:
Top Filing Countries: USA (2,157 cases), France (1,324), UK (422)
Top Respondent Countries: USA (1,814), China (831), France (353)
Cases Conducted in 18 Languages: English dominates with 91% of all cases
Top Industries Affected: Retail, Finance, Biotechnology, IT
Most Active Complainants: Carrefour, Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Lego
Additionally, five new country-code TLDs have been integrated into WIPO’s dispute resolution system: .ad (Andorra), .cv (Cape Verde), .lv (Latvia), .rw (Rwanda), and .sn (Senegal)—bringing the total to 85 ccTLDs under the UDRP framework. Notably, disputes involving .ai, .ae, and .co have surged, with .co (Colombia) once again leading in the number of cases.
While WIPO remains a key player in resolving domain disputes, other accredited UDRP providers like The Forum also handle cases. Further insights will be available in Doug Isenberg’s “Domain Dispute Digest Q4 2024”, which will be reviewed in the coming weeks.
