Domainnamewire:Virgil Griffith, the cryptocurrency expert who was imprisoned for assisting North Korea in evading sanctions, has been released this month after serving 36 months of his 56-month sentence. Griffith pleaded guilty in 2022 after attending a conference in North Korea, where he explained how blockchain technology could be used to circumvent international restrictions.
His incarceration unexpectedly led to a major domain dispute involving Eth.link, a domain he registered prior to his imprisonment. As a prominent Ethereum enthusiast, Griffith created a service that allowed Ethereum Name Service (.eth) domains to resolve through standard web browsers. For instance, users could visit example.eth.link to access the corresponding ENS domain.
While Griffith was behind bars, Eth.link expired and was subsequently auctioned on Dynadot, fetching a winning bid of $852,000. This triggered a legal battle initiated by True Names Ltd, the organization behind Ethereum Name Service, against domain registrar GoDaddy, auction platform Dynadot, and the auction winner, in an effort to reclaim the domain.
Ultimately, True Names Ltd decided to drop the lawsuit. As of now, Eth.link redirects to Eth.limo, a platform offering similar ENS domain resolution services.
Griffith’s release marks the closing of one chapter in a story that blended technology, law, and digital assets, while the fate of Eth.link has already been decided.
