Domainincite:Long-serving ICANN community member and UK government representative Nigel Hickson has passed away, as confirmed by friends and colleagues. He reportedly succumbed to cancer over the weekend.
While his family will feel the most profound loss, Hickson’s absence will also resonate deeply within the ICANN community and the broader domain name industry.
Most recently, Hickson served as the head of internet governance policy at the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. However, he was perhaps best known in the domain community as the UK’s representative on ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC). Until just a few weeks ago, he held the position of vice-chair of the GAC, frequently taking an active and vocal role in governmental discussions regarding ICANN policies during public meetings.
In addition to his governmental duties, Hickson was engaged with the domain investor community, where he shared the UK government’s perspectives at events such as the London Domains Summit.
Before his tenure in government, Hickson dedicated eight years to ICANN, serving as a vice president focused on government engagement.
Though I met Nigel only a handful of times, he always struck me as a genuinely pleasant individual with a surprisingly sharp sense of humor.
Hickson is survived by his wife and daughter, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences.
