UK Plans Law for International Blocking of Domains and IP Addresses

The UK government is working on a new law that would facilitate the international blocking of domains and IP addresses. The Crime and Policing Bill aims to compel foreign registries and registrars to take action against domains used for criminal activities.

The bill, first introduced on February 25, 2025, includes various provisions to combat crimes such as property offenses, cybercrime, and the misuse of intimate images. A key aspect of the legislation is the ability to obtain court orders to block domains and IP addresses linked to illegal activities, including phishing, fraud, and the distribution of unlawful content. Given that many domain and IP service providers operate outside the UK, the bill proposes international enforcement mechanisms for such orders.

The second reading of the bill is scheduled for March 10, 2025. Following further discussions in the House of Commons and the House of Lords, it remains to be seen when and in what form the legislation will ultimately be enacted.
