Team Internet Ousts GoDaddy in Major .Co Backend Deal

Team Internet has officially taken over the backend registry operations for .Co, Colombia’s country-code top-level domain, bringing GoDaddy’s 15-year tenure to an end. This transition not only reflects a significant operational shift but also signals a broader power reconfiguration within the global domain industry.

Under a new 10-year agreement signed with Colombia’s Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications (MINTIC), Team Internet will operate the registry via its joint venture, Equipo PuntoCo, formed in partnership with Panama-based registrar CCI REG.

The deal was largely influenced by pricing. Team Internet’s proposal undercut GoDaddy’s significantly, offering to manage .Co for only 8% of gross revenue, compared to the 19% GoDaddy previously received. Originally, .CO Internet (prior to its acquisition by Neustar and later GoDaddy) retained as much as 93%. The revised structure ensures that a larger share of the revenue now goes directly to the Colombian government.

While .Xyz remains the largest TLD on Team Internet’s infrastructure, .Co represents one of the largest TLD migrations in DNS history. With roughly 3.2 million domains at the start of 2025 and “over 3 million” currently under management, the .Co transition is comparable to the 3.1 million-name migration of .Au from Neustar to Afilias in 2018, though still behind this year’s .In migration (4.1 million domains) from GoDaddy to Tucows.

The contract was highly competitive, with Radix and Identity Digital also submitting bids. Team Internet ultimately prevailed due to its aggressive pricing and operational structure.

For GoDaddy, this marks another major loss in the ccTLD space, following its defeat in retaining .In, further highlighting the company’s weakening grip in the global registry services sector.
