South Korea Introduces New Subdomains for the .kr Country Code

For the first time in 22 years, South Korea is expanding its range of official subdomains.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), four new domain endings will be available in the future: .ai.kr, .it.kr, .io.kr, and .me.kr. While .ai.kr is intended for artificial intelligence, .it.kr focuses on information technology, .io.kr targets digital innovation, and .me.kr is designed for personal use. Individuals and companies based in Korea have been able to register these domains through accredited domain registrars since March 5, 2025. With fees of approximately KRW 20,000 per year (equivalent to about EUR 12.60), the new domains are also intended to be economically attractive. Eom Yeol, Director General at the MSIT, states:

As we enter the AI era, we are introducing these new .kr domains to meet the increasing demand for Internet domains related to emerging technologies and industries. We expect that domestic businesses and individuals seeking to build their brands will use these domains to protect their trademarks, strengthen their brand identity, and enhance their competitiveness.
