North Shields-based gaming startup BeamXR has successfully secured a £500,000 funding boost to enhance its technology. The company has developed an innovative streaming software development kit (SDK) designed for extended reality (XR) games, allowing them to be live-streamed on popular platforms. This kit is the first of its kind and supports standalone XR headsets, encompassing augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).
The funding consists of equity investments from Creative UK’s North East Culture and Creative Investment Programme, contributions from angel investors, and a £266,000 grant from Innovate UK. This financial support will be used to expand the capabilities of the streaming kit, enabling both game developers and content creators to stream simultaneously on platforms like Twitch, TikTok, and YouTube.
BeamXR’s SDK also allows gamers to interact with their friends through virtual cameras and two-way chat, tailored for any game. The company had previously received support from Innovation SuperNetwork, which connects UK businesses with the resources and finance necessary for innovation and growth.
Paul Miller, CEO of BeamXR, expressed enthusiasm about the potential for enhancing communication in VR gaming. He stated, “We see a fantastic opportunity to bring new levels of communication into VR gaming, providing tools to create exciting new social spaces that will pull more and more people into the VR experience.”
This funding marks a significant step for BeamXR as it aims to elevate the gaming experience and foster community engagement through its innovative technology.
