The U.S.-based Medistry LLC, registry operator of the .med domain, has announced a significant policy shift, transitioning the once-restricted medical Top-Level Domain (TLD) into an open and commercially accessible namespace.
Previously limited to applicants through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, the .med domain is now available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. Accredited registrars are offering open registrations, and domains are also tradeable on the secondary market.
“A registrant of a .med domain name can be an individual or organization. All available domain names in .med are approved for registration on a first come, first serve basis through .med accredited registrars,” reads the new official policy.
Target Audience Remains Medical
Despite the liberalization, the core target audience remains the medical and healthcare sector. The registry continues to position .med for:
- Healthcare institutions and professionals
- Providers of medical products, pharmaceuticals, and services
- Clinical, hospital, and research organizations
- Medical educators and academics
Key Dates and Current Stats
- Pre-registration phase: May–August 2025
- General availability begins: September 2, 2025
As of now, around 42,000 .med domains have been registered. However, many of these appear to be numeric and hyphenated domains likely held by the registry itself, possibly intended for future directory services or internal use.
Pricing details for open registrations have not yet been officially disclosed.
With the shift, .med joins the ranks of premium sector-specific TLDs opening their doors to broader audiences—balancing brand integrity with expanded accessibility.
