The Kenya Network Information Center (KeNIC) has raised the prices for .ke domain registrations. As of February 3, 2025, the cost for registering a second-level .ke domain is now KES 2,500 (~€18.50) per year, while third-level domains cost KES 999 (~€7.50) per year. The transfer fee has also been set at KES 999.
Reasons Behind the Price Increase
KeNIC justifies the decision by citing sustainability, investment in growth, and inflation. However, the total number of .ke domain registrations has remained stagnant at around 109,735 in recent years. A previous price reduction for third-level domains nearly five years ago did not lead to a significant increase in new registrations.
Challenges Facing the .KE Domain
Several factors continue to impact the attractiveness of .ke:
• Strong competition from generic domains like .com
• Concerns over potential political influence on domain management
• Many businesses shifting to social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Instagram, as well as e-commerce marketplaces like Jiji and Jumia
The increased registration fees are expected to be passed on to customers, potentially making .ke domains less appealing.
Expert Opinions and Recommendations
Mwendwa Kivuva, an expert involved with ICANN, emphasizes the need for KeNIC to build greater trust and offer more value for .ke domains. “KeNIC must focus on building trust, simplifying pricing models, aggressively marketing the benefits of .KE domains, and ensuring meaningful public participation in its decision-making processes.”
It remains to be seen whether the price increase will hinder the growth of .ke domains or pave the way for future investments.
