ICANN81 in Istanbul to Address Future of Global Internet Governance

ISTANBUL – October 30, 2024 – The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to host its 81st Public Meeting from November 9 to 14, 2024, in Istanbul, Türkiye. The event, organized by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA), aims to gather both in-person and virtual participants from around the world to discuss critical Internet governance issues, featuring workshops, public forums, and policy discussions.

“ICANN81 presents a vital opportunity for the global community to come together and address key developments shaping the future of the Internet,” said Sally Costerton, ICANN Interim President and CEO. “This event is significant, particularly with the upcoming release of the next round of new generic top-level domains and our initiatives to promote innovation and diversity. I’m excited to see our collaborative efforts in Istanbul strengthen inclusion and empower diverse voices to ensure the Internet remains a resilient resource for all.”

Ömer Abdullah Karagözoğlu, President of ICTA, noted, “Hosting ICANN81 in Istanbul recognizes the city’s role as a hub for global discussions on Internet governance. Türkiye is strategically important for fostering international collaboration in this field, and we are proud to welcome global participants to engage in these essential discussions.”

Key Topics: New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) and Multistakeholder Governance

ICANN81 will emphasize the New gTLDs Program: Next Round, which focuses on expanding the Domain Name System (DNS). This program aims to enhance innovation and competition through the introduction of new gTLDs. As ICANN prepares for the next round of gTLD applications, particular attention will be given to empowering underrepresented groups, especially from developing countries. A highlight will be the anticipated launch of the Applicant Support Program (ASP) in November 2024, which offers fee reductions and access to professional services for eligible applicants, including nonprofits and small businesses.

The meeting will also showcase ICANN’s multistakeholder model, a fundamental aspect of its Internet governance approach, in preparation for the 2025 World Summit on the Information Society Review (WSIS+20). This model ensures that all stakeholders—including governments, the private sector, civil society, and the technical community—have a voice in shaping the Internet’s future. Earlier this year, ICANN launched the WSIS+20 Outreach Network to promote this inclusive strategy.

The Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building

In line with its tradition of honoring community contributions, ICANN81 will present the Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building during the welcome ceremony. Named after the late Dr. Tarek Kamel, a pioneer in the Internet space, this award recognizes exceptional contributions within the ICANN community.

Registration Information

Both in-person and virtual registration will remain open until November 8, 2024, with no on-site registration available. Attendance is free for all interested parties. For more information and to register, please visit the meeting website.
