ICANN Moves Annual Conference from Oman to Dublin Due to Middle East Tensions

Due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the relocation of its ICANN84 Annual General Meeting from Muscat, Oman to Dublin, Ireland. The event will still take place on the originally scheduled dates, October 25–30, 2025.

The recent outbreak of conflict between Israel and Iran has destabilized the region. Just a week ago, Qatar temporarily closed its airspace in response to an Iranian attack on a U.S. military base located there. While ICANN noted that Oman remains a safe host country, concerns over restricted airspace and potential travel complications led to the early decision to change the venue.

In a public statement, ICANN explained that the move was necessary to prevent the risk of having to switch to a remote-only format and to ensure a stable, well-attended conference:

“Given this uncertainty – and the possibility that travel to and from Oman could remain difficult – ICANN made the decision to relocate ICANN84 now to allow adequate time to secure a suitable alternative venue, given the impending planning deadlines for the meeting. Acting promptly allows ICANN to avoid a scenario where the meeting could be forced into a remote-only format, and helps to ensure a stable and well-attended event.”

Dublin will now serve as the new host city, offering a more secure and accessible environment for the global internet governance community.
