ICANN Board Approves Changes to .xxx gTLD Registry Agreement

The .xxx gTLD, operated by GoDaddy’s ICM Registry, will no longer be a “sponsored” domain following the ICANN board’s approval of its new Registry Agreement during the ICANN 81 AGM in Istanbul. The updated agreement aligns with standard gTLD practices, removing the need for registrants to affirm membership in a non-existent “sponsored community.” This also marks the dissolution of IFFOR, which previously oversaw .xxx policies and grants. While some protective policies have been transitioned to Public Interest Commitments, .xxx will now face fewer operational restrictions. Despite these changes, the domain largely thrives on defensive registrations, with an estimated five figures worth of domains blocked via services like AdultBlock and GlobalBlock.
