ICANN has announced that Libya’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD), .ly, will have an Arabic version. The top-level domain will be “ليبيا.” representing “Libya,” with the ASCII Punycode format of .xn–mgbb7fyab. Arabic is written from right to left, so the “dot” appears at the end of the domain in Arabic.
ICANN stated that the string has passed the String Evaluation phase of the Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) ccTLD Fast Track process, making it eligible for delegation.
It’s unclear how long Libya has been in this “Fast Track” process, but according to Wikipedia, requests for “ليبيا.” go back over a decade. This kind of delay is not uncommon.
Notably, “ليبيا.” will have a different managing organization than the existing Latin-script ccTLD, which is unusual but not unprecedented. The Arabic version will be managed by the General Authority of Communications and Informatics, Regulatory Affairs Directorate, while the current .ly is managed by the General Post and Telecommunication Company.
The .ly domain is widely known on the English-speaking internet as a domain hack, with one of the most famous examples being the URL shortening service bit.ly.
