Global Domain Growth and Decline in 2024: Key Trends

2024 witnessed notable shifts in the landscape of country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs). While the rise of artificial intelligence led many to speculate a surge in .ai domains, it was Russia’s .Ru that emerged as the fastest-growing ccTLD of the year.

Top Growers

1. .Ru (Russia):

Russia’s .Ru added nearly 388,000 new domains, bringing its total to approximately 5,817,000. However, its Cyrillic counterpart .РФ saw a slight dip, declining from 768,000 to 760,000 domains.

2. .Id (Indonesia):

With an increase of almost 289,000 domains, .Id crossed the one-million mark in November, ending the year at around 1,215,000 domains.

3. .Tr (Türkiye):

Liberalization of second-level registrations fueled growth, with .Tr adding 271,000 new domains to reach 1,283,000.

4. .Ai (Anguilla):

Despite its anticipated growth, .Ai expanded by a slightly lower margin, gaining 244,000 domains to exceed 250,000 by early January 2025.

5. Other Notables:

.Pt (Portugal): Added 149,000 domains, reaching 1,930,000.

.Br (Brazil): Increased by 134,000, totaling 5,372,000.

• Other ccTLDs, including .Fr (France), .Ir (Iran), .Pl (Poland), .De (Germany), .My (Malaysia), and .Ca (Canada), experienced five-digit growth.

Biggest Declines

1. .Uk (United Kingdom):

The UK’s .Uk experienced the most significant shrinkage, losing 472,000 domains to end the year at 10,261,000. Third-level domains such as .Co.Uk bore the brunt, dropping below nine million for the first time in 15 years.

2. .Nl (Netherlands):

Down 106,000 domains, .Nl ended the year at 6,192,000, continuing its decline since mid-2023.

3. .Ua (Ukraine):

Amid ongoing conflict, .Ua saw a reduction of 57,000 domains, ending with 458,000.

4. Other Declines:

.Ar (Argentina), .Dk (Denmark), .Kr (South Korea), .At (Austria), .Se (Sweden), and .Eu (European Union) experienced five-figure declines.

• Modest losses were reported by .Hk (Hong Kong), .Cl (Chile), .It (Italy), .Il (Israel), .Mx (Mexico), and .Ie (Ireland).

General Trends and Observations

Approximately 75% of ccTLDs reported growth, while the remaining experienced declines. Factors such as policy changes, geopolitical events, and emerging technologies played key roles in shaping these outcomes.

However, the data is not exhaustive. Registries from major markets like China and the US have yet to publish year-end figures, and some ccTLDs, including .Tv, .Co, .In, and .Me, typically do not report their totals. Additionally, variations in how registries calculate domain counts may skew direct comparisons.

As we enter 2025, these shifts highlight the dynamic nature of global domain trends, influenced by technology, policy, and regional developments.
