Crusoe Energy Systems LLC, a data center startup specializing in AI and high-performance computing infrastructure, has secured $600 million in a Series D funding round, pushing its valuation to $2.8 billion. The round was led by Founders Fund, with participation from Nvidia, Fidelity, Long Journey Ventures, Mubadala, Ribbit Capital, and Valor Equity Partners.

Pioneering Clean Energy for AI Workloads

Founded in 2018, Crusoe initially leveraged excess natural gas from U.S. oil wells to power bitcoin mining operations. The company has since pivoted to building AI data centers, utilizing clean energy to support cost-effective and environmentally aligned generative AI computing.

Key Developments

1. $3.4 Billion Joint Venture: In October, Crusoe partnered with Blue Owl Capital Inc. and Primary Digital to build a 998,000-square-foot data center facility in Abilene, Texas, capable of supporting over 1.2 gigawatts of energy. The facility is expected to house up to 100,000 GPUs, making it one of the largest AI-focused data centers globally.

2. Crusoe Cloud: The company launched a high-performance cloud platform for AI and machine learning workloads, enabling developers and data scientists to train and deploy models efficiently.

3. Global Expansion: Crusoe operates in nine U.S. states and three countries, including Iceland, serving clients worldwide.

Strategic Focus

With over 15 gigawatts of clean energy in development, Crusoe plans to build additional data centers to support the growing demand for AI and high-performance computing. The company’s collaborations with Nvidia, Vast Data, Deloitte, and Rescale further highlight its leadership in the AI infrastructure space.

Quote from the CEO

“We’ve designed this data center to enable the largest clusters of GPUs in the world that will drive breakthroughs in AI,” said Chase Lochmiller, co-founder and CEO of Crusoe.

Why It Matters

Crusoe’s innovative approach to harnessing low-cost, clean energy positions it as a leader in sustainable AI infrastructure, addressing both environmental concerns and the increasing demand for scalable AI compute solutions.
