The U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has launched a “Market Research Request for Information” (RFI) to assess the future of the .us country-code top-level domain (ccTLD).
The NTIA seeks innovative approaches to enhance the stability and security of the Domain Name System (DNS), combat DNS abuse, enforce the usTLD Nexus policy, and establish a privacy-friendly framework for accessing domain registration data. The Nexus policy requires that .us domain registrants have a legitimate connection to the United States.
Some organizations, including the Messaging, Malware and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG), have publicly shared their responses. They advocate for maintaining the status quo in managing .us, emphasizing its role as a critical national infrastructure with the potential to generate over $100 million in revenue under the next registry contract.
It remains unclear how .us will evolve under former and current President Donald Trump. While there have been no official announcements, a rebranding of the domain extension appears unlikely.
