.music Domains Finally Launch After 15 Years, with Strict Industry Requirements

After more than 15 years of anticipation, DotMusic has launched .music domains, bringing them to general availability today. The release kicks off with a week-long Early Access Period (EAP), where prices start at $11,999 and gradually decrease each day until reaching around $60 when standard general availability begins on October 8.

Despite the high demand potential for .music, strict self-imposed restrictions may limit its broad adoption. As a “Community” gTLD, .music requires registrants to verify their identity and connection to the music industry within 90 days of registration, or risk having their domains suspended or deleted.

Registrants must obtain a Music ID through a verification process managed by DotMusic’s sister company, ID.music, in partnership with verification firm Shufti. The domains will not resolve or appear in the .music zone file until this verification is complete.

DotMusic is also planning to build additional services around the Music ID, including a Music Hub aimed at helping artists engage with fans. However, the launch has faced some confusion, with domain names tied to these services not yet resolving, and uncertainty surrounding the official registry website.

Historically, gTLDs with stringent registration requirements have struggled in the market, but DotMusic has tried to simplify the process by placing verification requirements after registration.

With 213 domains in its zone file as of yesterday, it remains to be seen how .music will fare as the general availability phase unfolds.
