The .de registry, DENIC eG, has announced plans to lay the foundation for the next generation of domain provisioning with the introduction of the RESTful Provisioning Protocol (RPP).
In the early 2000s, domain provisioning was characterized by proprietary interfaces for each registry. Every solution was unique, requiring registrars to bear significant costs and technical effort to communicate with various registries. The adoption of the EPP standard (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) in 2004 (RFCs 5730–5734) brought much-needed standardization, becoming the cornerstone of communication between hundreds of registries and thousands of registrars.
Now, RPP is set to complement EPP as a modern enhancement. Based on REST architecture and using JSON as its data format, RPP aims to make domain provisioning simpler and more efficient. Its goal is to further streamline integration between registries and registrars, encourage new market entrants, and accelerate innovation processes.
RPP has the potential to usher in a new era of flexibility and collaboration within the domain industry. By leveraging modern technologies and approaches, it could transform how registrars and registries work together, fostering a more inclusive and innovative ecosystem.
