DNS Belgium, the administrator of the Belgian country code top-level domain .be, is taking stronger action against online child abuse.
The registry has committed to utilizing the “Domain Alert” services provided by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). Specifically, this involves two service offerings: the TLD Hopping List and Domain Alerts. The TLD Hopping List, maintained by the IWF, tracks websites containing images and videos of child sexual abuse that are registered under at least three different top-level domains. In such cases, there is a suspicion that the domain owner will reactivate their website under a different domain extension (TLD hopping) as soon as the active domain is shut down. If the website is already listed under .be, DNS Belgium can verify the owner; if not, registration triggers a review. With the Domain Alert service, the registry receives notifications whenever a .be domain is identified as being linked to websites hosting CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material). Nel Broothaerts from DNS Belgium states:
“Registrars and registries play an essential role in combating the spread of child sexual abuse images and videos. Last year, we noted a 32% increase in reports through our helpline compared to the previous year. It’s clear that we need to step up our efforts in Belgium.”
