Amazon to Launch New gTLDs for Books and Fashion in 2025

Amazon Prepares to Launch Long-Dormant gTLDs for Books and Fashion in 2025

Amazon is gearing up to revive two of its long-inactive generic top-level domains (gTLDs), aimed at the books and fashion industries, with plans to launch them in 2025. However, these new TLDs—.ファッション, the Japanese term for “fashion,” and .書籍, the Chinese word for “books”—are unlikely to attract much attention from English speakers.

According to updated filings with ICANN, Amazon Registry plans to make both TLDs available to the public in early November 2025. Despite the extended timeline, no details about pricing or registration policies have been released yet.

Both gTLDs completed their mandatory sunrise periods over eight years ago, and currently, there are only around 50 names registered, primarily for internal use or sunrise purposes.

Amazon holds 54 gTLDs, a mix of brand-specific and generic terms, but only nine of these generic gTLDs have launched. Of those, only two have amassed registrations in the thousands. Initially, Amazon applied for its product-category gTLDs with the intent of keeping them as a closed registry, reserving all domains for its own use.

With the upcoming launch of these two TLDs, Amazon is once again signaling its continued interest in using niche gTLDs to target specific industries.
